Hyper Go Go - Born To Dance - 23-Oct-09 03:18 PM
I regard this as one of the best finds ive made in recent times as far as old skool EPs go. The first thing youll realise is that youre really buying an album rather than a 12", with an impressive 4 tracks on both sides. From the bleepy acid house of Future World, through the breakbeat hardcore of The Force and to the old skool techno/house of Born To Dance, this a brilliantly varied piece of vinyl covering most old skool genres. And while perhaps there are no timeless classics on here, id rate even the worst of the tracks as very good. The result being a whole that is far greater than the sum of the parts. One definitely worth tracking down.
Caia - The Magic Dragon EP - 28-Sep-09 07:33 PM
Heavy Weather starts off deep and dubby with some dark overtones suggesting a particular direction, but about one minute in it does an about-turn becoming a fantasic summery almost balearic sounding track. This became a well listened to anthem of mine in the mid 2000s. La Telecabine is not a bad in itself, but heavily samples Tangerine Dreams great Love On A Real Train and unfortunately does not come up a better track. Subway Freedom, the last track featured, should not be overlooked. A lovely downtempo track siutable for those afterhour moments. Overall this is a great downtempo EP and well worth investing in.
CastleRock & Dov (3) - Everybody - 28-Sep-09 05:36 PM
I first heard the original mix of this on a Jody Wisternoff mix back in late 2006 and waited a long time to see it finally released. I must confess that so few tracks get me excited these days but there was something about the easy-going melody of this that i just could not get out of my head. It sits at the more progressive end of house music and is mellow yet uplifting from start to finish. The vocal sits perfectly and that fantastic piano break could not be improved. Perhaps it was the fact that i first heard this over a long summer, but ive known this track for almost 3 years now and still regard it as one of my favourite feel good tracks of recent times. As for the remixes, well like most modern tracks i can take them or leave them. No improvement on a superb first version. Good to know that great house tunes are still being made.
Slam / Rejuvination - Eterna / I.B.O. - 13-Sep-09 08:27 PM
A pioneering piece of work. From the initial chimes and ensuing ambient synth lines, you know this is going to be something special. And yet just as the track heads deep into after-party territory, that synth line drops leaving only dance floor friendy beats to move the track forward, building slowly back towards the ambience heard in the opening bars. Those fantastic staccato vocals are introduced along with ever changing elements in the main track making this a brilliant piece of work that is regarded as a true classic by many from that era.
Its been often said that gat decors passion was the track the coined the phrase "progressive house", but there can be no doubt that slam got there first. Absoluting outstanding. 11/10.
La Serrena - I'm Free (Say After Me) - 28-Aug-09 06:59 AM
This release is perhaps not as widely known or sought after as the original Morgan King release on Btech, perhaps due to the different artist name used here. But both full mixes that were used on the highly regarded Northern Exposure album by Sasha and John Digweed can be found here, and to my knowledge this was the only CD ever released that contains them both thus making this a prized possession. Ambient / Progressive at its absolute finest - do what you can to obtain a copy.
