Will Sergeant - Themes For GRIND - 24-Oct-05 11:30 AM
Will Sergeant is best known as the guitarist for Echo and the Bunnymen, but fans of that group shouldn't go looking for this LP expecting a familiar-sounding spinoff. Themes for GRIND has no vocals and none of Echo and the Bunnymen's trademark hooks. This album will probably appeal to anyone who enjoys dark, atmospheric ambient music. It's experimental, but not in an annoying or pretentious way, and evokes a gray-sky world of abandoned factories and empty streets. Highly recommended.

Maurice* - This Is Acid (A New Dance Craze) - 29-Apr-04 06:50 AM
This record should be called "This Ain't Acid." All three remixes by Les Adams pretty much completely strip this track of all the raw, dark, 303-driven power of the original, and what we're left with is just generic, forgettable house music.

Peter Richard - For You, For Only You - 21-Jan-04 07:19 AM
I bought this 12" for the B-side—Walking in the Neon, which is a beautiful, deep production by Rago and Farina, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the two A-side tracks are, too. For You, For Only You is a very catchy track with a wonderful melody. It's poppy and fun without being naive. Marlene is also quite nice. It's been a long time since I've bought a three-track 12" that didn't have at least one dud on it, but this is a top-notch record in every way. Highly recommended!

Le Syndicat Electronique - Philosophie - 01-Oct-03 10:04 PM
I can't believe no one else has posted any reviews of this album yet, or posted even a comment or impression. Fine. I'll be the first one. My feeling is this: While there are a ton of Le Syndicat Electronique albums available on Invasion Planète, this is the best so far. By a long shot. I'll admit that I really like Le Syndicat Electronique's records in general, so I am naturally biased. However; this is, in my opinion, the best so far--by a long shot. It is also one of the best E.B.M. albums of all time. I think that history will place this double LP alongside D.A.F.'s 'Alles ist Gut,' Nitzer Ebb's 'That Total Age,' Skinny Puppy's 'Bites,' Wumpscut's 'Bunkertor 7,' and The Klinik's 'Face to Face.' Just my opinion.

Wreckin Cru, The* - Surgery - 17-Sep-03 08:42 AM
I remember reading a reference to Dr. Dre's not-so-"G" beginnings in a review of an old Schoolly D record. The writer disparagingly commented that back when Schoolly D was running with a gang in real life, Dre was still rocking wet-look hair and sequined jumpsuits as a member of World Class Wreckin' Cru. (These types of disses are rampant, such as the writer who said Tupac was just an incredibly faggy dancer for Digital Underground who got cast as a badass in the movie "Juice" and then decided to start acting that way for the rest of his life, or Suge Knight's comments about Snoop Dogg being the only rapper he ever knew who "Paid to get in the game.") Anyway, all this just goes to show what kind of influence a single album can have. With the success of Straight Outta Compton, suddenly it wasn't enough to simply make great tracks, or be a great producer (like Dr. Dre). Every California rapper had to "live the life" and prove that he was 10 times harder than any of his rivals. It's too bad that Dr. Dre disowned a lot of his early work. In my opinion, it's some of the best stuff he ever did.
