Heather Parisi - Disco Bambina - 05-Nov-07 05:54 PM
If cheesy vocals are your thing, this is a great record. This really only applies to Disco Bambina. Opens with vocals that immediately date the song - but once you get through the first vocal segment, it quickly morphs into a dark and surprisingly competent instrumental piece that somehow survived dating itself well enough to be able to be dropped into a modern house set. The layering of instrumentation is just wonderful - there really isn't another word for it. Flipping over to the B-side immediately continues the dark theme and the lyrics bear that out. The record simply got better as it progressed. Not an influential piece - but one that should have been, and was overlooked.

Crazy Gang - We Are The Crazy Gang - 05-Nov-07 05:41 PM
"We Are The Crazy Gang" is a rather fabled release amongst Italo buyers due to its relative rarity. However, while overlooked in the 1980s, this Claudio Simonetti masterpiece has gained new recognition during the current Italo revival. The LP straddles the line between experimental electronic italo-disco and period specific Italian Funk. Standout tracks are "Every Sunday", "Computerize", and "In Love". There is a very diverse array of material on this LP that begs to be explored...

Cut Glass - Without Your Love - 05-Nov-07 05:32 PM
This song was a favorite of Patrick Cowley in the day - he even remixed it. From the outset, Without Your Love strikes an upbeat, infectious, and catchy tune that carries the record. The vocals are what make the song - and while I am often ambivalent to poorly executed vocals, in this distance, they serve as instrumentation - not downed out by the electronics, as is common in HiNRG and Italo releases. The B side is just as good, however slightly darker in tone - and features stronger vocals than Without Your Love. The song is one you'd play at 5AM when wrapping up a set, whereas Without Your Love is definitely the track when things start moving along at 1AM...

Blackway - New Life / Follow Me - 01-Sep-07 11:27 AM
This was a hugely influential record when it came out, and is experiencing a new lease on life probably largely due to the attention drawn to it due to Casco's re-release of it on The Cyber Album, as well as Blackway featuring prominently in some of Panama Racing's record releases. Very creative use of not-very-exceptional electronics and equipment for the period - fairly obvious that this music was strung together on a tight budget, nevertheless, the end product is astounding in scope and quality. It covers such a range of musical sound, yet remains cohesive. Right from the A side of New Life, it strikes a dark tone closes with an even darker note of a simulated nuclear explosion with Follow Me on the B side. I really couldn't give this a more glowing review. Everything you could want in a record: pedigree, rarity, and it just makes you feel good.
