Iris (2) - Awakening - 22-Jul-05 02:46 AM
Awakening shows the maturing of Reagan's songwriting and it shows how new member Andrew Sega has had a profound impact on this group with his production skills. It also propelled this band more into the spotlight and got them a new European distribution deal and thus a couple European mini-tours supporting the likes of De/vision amongst others. Even though Iris is considered a veteren in the modern synthpop scene now, this album is only the beginning of an amazing future for them where they will continue to push the boundaries and leave genres behind as they create a true name for themselves. They also chose to give a tribute to one of the bands that inspired them, Seven Red Seven.

Kill Rock Stars - 14-Jun-05 01:48 PM
This label is responsible for me getting into spoken word as a young punk kid, we're talking Lydia Lunch, Kathleen Hanna, Exene Cervenka, Miranda July, Kathy Acker, and the list goes on and on.. and I should mention Steven Jesse Bernstein that was released on Sub Pop was a huge influence as well. Then they started releasing the full-on riot punk music that complimented all the nice hardcore music that was going on in the early 90s as well. This is the label that spawned Kathleen Hanna that would give us Julie Ruin and Le Tigre, the latter which is still making waves today. This label is just an all-around good example of how to become an indie rock legend!

Righteous Babe Records - 11-Jun-05 11:57 PM
Ani DiFranco started this label up on her own when no A person would give her the time of day. She started learning her way around a studio and then she begun to release her own albums as she went out on tour. This was in the late 80s/early 90s. Since then she has released 18 albums of original material and had NUMEROUS opportunities to sign to a major label and she said NO to every single one of them because she realized that there was nothing they could do for her that she couldn't do for herself. It was enough to make Prince jealous because she did what Prince should've done a decade and a half earlier. Ani will always be the "little folksinger from Buffalo" but she has certainly carved out her place in the world with her brilliant music and DIY attitude.

Mark Lanegan - Scraps At Midnight - 21-May-05 04:09 PM
This solo album from the Screaming Trees front-man shows not only his great songwriting but his brooding voice which often gets him comparisons with Jim Morrison. This album isn't as loud or distortion heavy as his Screaming Trees songs, but darker and more moody. Even though Mike Johnson and J Mascis guest on the album, their influence isn't really prevelent in that you won't hear Dino Jr type sounds going on here. This is a highly recommended album from one of the best voices and songwriters in the rock world.

VNV Nation - Matter + Form - 17-May-05 03:05 AM
I was skeptical about this album because VNV has released some pretty brilliant albums in the past and I was worried they may slip up and release something subpar... they didn't do that here. What they did do is reinvent themselves somewhat and get closer to becoming songwriters first and dancefloor killers second. The single "Chrome" wasn't a good choice for the first track in my opinion because the drums sound cheesy on it, but after that the rest of the album is pretty great. "Arena" will still tear up dancefloors while showing a bit more of a pop sensability about songwriter Ronan Harris. Then you have a couple instrumentals in the middle which show how great Humate and Ronan are as producers... then you have a really aggro song in "Entropy," when they perform this live it is time to get your mosh on a bit. Then they take it back the other way with "Endless Skies" and Homeward" which are slower and more melodic.. "Homeward" is absolutely brilliant, could be the best song he's ever written. "Perpetual" is the band's self-proclaimed "favorite song to perform live" and if you see them on this tour or on future tours you will see why, they perform it perfectly and it brings the house down. VNV Nation and Ronan still have what it takes to make a brilliant album.
