Die Kreuzen - Century Days - 03-Aug-08 07:32 PM
Milwaukee's Die Kreuzen was a rare indie act in the late eighties whose sound mutated greatly from album to album. On "Century Days," Die Kreuzen adopted a more conventional pop approach to songwriting, eschewing the groundbreaking slowcore dissonance of "October File" and their radical re-invention of hardcore on their stellar debut.

"Days" boasts some brilliant guitarwork by Brian Egeness (Earthquakes, Elizabeth) that is perfectly complimented by singer Dan Kubinski's impassioned melodic howl throughout the arc of the album.

While much of the album revolves around Egeness' distinct fondness for tri-tone dissonance and ultra-processed guitar tonalities, the band reveals a quieter almost retrospective side on sublime subdued numbers like "These Days" and "No. 3" (perhaps the band's finest recorded moment).

The album is also notable for helping to launch the production career of Butch Vig, who would go on to great success producing records by Nirvana and with his own band, Garbage.

For many Die Kreuzen fans, "Century Days" is the high-water mark for a truly exceptional American alternative rock band.
