Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - 10-Dec-04 08:15 AM
Theres no way on earth you could not submit to the charm of this album. Fans of Aphexs later work should find out where his mastery of perfection all began, and newcomers should give it a listen on the basis of this albums amorphous beauty and charisma. This album contains, in its purest form, the common link between all electronic forms of music. While Richards more recent singles have been poured through a thick film of sarcasm, the songs of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 truly represent the subliminal moodiness that has followed him through I Care Because You Do and the Richard D James LP. As detailed and undulating as his new work is, sometimes I feel as though he has lost some of the pensive and brooding airiness that makes his work so unique.
Beautiful melodies that get caught in your mind form an addiction that is only appeased by another listen. Like the dude said, timeless is the best word to use to describe this album, for although the instruments used in this creation have been surpassed by ten years of updated models, the compositions are perfectly executed, thus exposing the raw beauty, devoid of distraction or clutter. The fact that this is still widely regarded as Richard D. James finest album to date shows what perfection has been achieved here.
Songs that still need a listen years after buying this album: Tha, Pulsewidth, i, Ageispolis [which I am only just beginning to really get into], Heliosphan, Hedphelym and Actium. The first track is a really nice introduction, too. I reccommend listening to Heliosphan or We Are The Music Makers if you want to make a decision online. The other tracks require many, many listens to reveal their true beauty, plus RealAudio can kill some of the joy of those subliminal basslines.
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker - 10-Dec-04 05:20 AM
Im at a loss to find the explicit content which the parental advisory sticker on the cover warns. perhaps aphex twins devilishy grinning face super imposed on a buxom beautys bod is what the warning is about or maybe the link to chris cunninghams video which would have been naughty if it wasnt so downright disturbingly funny.
windowlicker is by far aphex twins best and most commercial release without compromising any of his skills that makes him such a talented musical genius. sounding like a warped soundtrack to a porno movie, windowlicker writhes and contorts its way to the fuzzy electric guitar climax. the only track worth the cost of the EP! (formula) or (equation) or a bunch of unpronounceable scribble starts of strong but falls short at the end and we hear more nannou style musicbox twinkling to last us a lifetime on drukqs.
Scan X - Classic Reworks - 17-Feb-04 09:10 AM
The Scan X reworks of the track ‘Classic’ are essentially minimal techno/electro sounds. The “Telemetric mix” is centred on a 4/4 beat while the changes essentially alternate between open and closed shuffled high hats and an octave driven bass line. This is a techno stormer with simple electronic sound effects that tend to reverberate at the back of the mix. There is no real break in this track, just relentless techno goodness.
The B-side of this EP sees two completely different mixes. The ‘Classic Original” is an electro break track laden with layered string arpeggios and spacey effects. Again octave movements in the string layers fuel the main changes with a groovy break down that focuses on the beat. At the drop the same sounds kick back in with additional filtered pads to take it to that next level.
The second mix on this side (mix down version) is a lot less filtered than it’s electro counterpart and there is no beat at all. This mix is pretty much layered strings that would be very useful as Dj tools or an intro track.
Scan X has come away with a good tight 12” of tech/electro goodness. It is certainly suited for people into the harder side of tech and the more weird and atmospheric side of electro.
Scan X - 19-Jan-04 10:15 AM
Scan X (a.k.a. Frenchman Stephane Dri) is one of the most enduring and highly-regarded European techno producers around, having crafted critically-acclaimed releases on the FNAC and F-Com labels since the mid-nineties. Hes also proved impossible to pigeonhole throughout this time: turning his hand to moody and linear club stompers one second, and shimmering, string-drenched electronica the next...But one word to describe his live PA performance : WICKED !!!
