James Blood Ulmer - In And Out - 31-Oct-09 05:52 AM
The latest release of James Blood Ulmer - musically close to perfect, not far away from the outstanding "Live at the Bayerischer Hof". Very interesting variation of the 30 year old "Baby Talk", now more in the Blues section and without David Murrays saxophone, but a great new version with JBUs guitar now taking the fast part of the Baby Talk theme. The other songs are not only a repetition of older takes, they come with astonishing and vivid new ideas. Going to 70, JBU is still young in developing his very special way of playing the (Electric) Blues. Too bad, that the recording itself shows the signs of the modern MP3-world, overemphasized basses and a low dynamic range make the CD ready for every Ipod (is this music really made for that? I doubt!), but not for a good and honest stereo equipment without any regulators for treble, bass or something else, where the music goes "In+Out" how it is stored on the CD. Maybe I should buy an equalizer now?

Miles Davis - Munich Concert - 25-Oct-09 04:00 AM
I have been on this concert in Munich in 1988 and it was a great experience seeing and hearing Miles improvising the music I already knew from his last records like "We want Miles", "Decoy" or "Tutu", although the acoustic in the Munich Philharmonie was and is -let me say- difficult. So for the music itself I would give 5 points of 5, but the recording is very poor. As far as I remember, there was no really professional recording equipment, they just used two microphones hanging from the ceiling somewhere around those funny sonic sails about 5 metres above the musicians. So the sound is more like in a railway station hall, the basses are mostly overemphasized. An interesting release especially for the people, who had the luck to join this concert as reminder, although the sound in the audience was much better as now on this release. In total 3 points of 5.
