Brian Jonestown Massacre, The - Strung Out In Heaven - 07-Sep-07 12:59 PM
This is a truly remarkable album. TBJM relive the 60s... well their own version of the 60s. From the outset "Going To Hell" they present us with a non-stop sequence of stunning 60s classics - there's just one problem though, none of these songs were written in the 60s! TBJM infuse the whole thing with a freshness that makes it breathtaking, while they use the familiar 60s studio balance, tambourines, harmonica, they're never reduced to hero-worship, and they blend reverence for their obvious influences, especially the Rolling Stones, while they're almost mocking their gods at the same time! It's this mixture of reverence and irreverence, combined with a very 90s attitude and amazing songs that make this album such a standout!
I don't think that you can go far wrong with any TBJM album, but this one is a real grower/stayer and stands at least a head-height above their other worthy efforts.
Kangaroo Paw - Kangaroo Paw - 27-May-06 12:44 PM
This is one of the most original electronic albums that I have come across. It's very difficult to spot any influence, other than an interest in 60s pop and theme music (Beatles maybe?). An amazing creation that draws me back again and again, well worth overcoming the challenge it presents on first listen.
