Return, The (2) - Basic Rules - 02-Nov-09 03:29 AM
Basic rules is the killer on this 12".

Sharp 'ticking' beats, a ghostly high pitched synth and a deep subby bassline overlaid with soulfull female vocal 'Ooooohs' make this a hell of a roller.

It follows the formulaic DnB structure: intro> breakdown> drop> bridge> 2nd drop, but does it with superb, minimal style, moving tons of air on good speakers and getting heads nodding in approval.

Recommended for any fans of Kemet or anyone into minimal rollers, it would work equally well in a liquid or tech set.

DJ Vapour / Outrage (4) / Jamal (4) / Skitty - No Smoke EP - 14-Mar-08 06:42 PM
Wasn't quite sure about this EP when I first heard it. Half of me thought it was a blinder and the other half... it's 90% a blinder but missing just that tiny something.

None the less I bought 2 copies of it anyways, just to be sure like ...

Some months later I am happy to say, it a sure fire bludclaat jungle classic.

No smoke is likely the one you'll come back to, but after many listens and spins in the mix on a screwed up Friday night, every tune on this EP has it's rightful place in your 'fuckest up'est' memory. One of those moments you felt like music was the most important thing in the universe. Top EP and one that I'll be surprised if any other release on this label will ever live up to. Best stop it at the one issue eh.

Kemal And Rob Data* - Gene Sequence / Portal - 14-Mar-08 04:38 PM
Picked up this tune for a quid in music and video exchange. Man I was laughing all the way to my decks. What a fooooking defining moment in darkstep drum and bass this was. The tune looks back at the entire era of Virus, Bad Company and the whole late nineties darkstep DnB era and says "Well fook man in all those years that was the best y'all could come up with??"

The amount of musical ideas in this record could be split over a plethora of releases and form a label in their own right.

Kemal, DnB owns you money mate.

Roni Size - Fashion / Step Up - 18-Jan-08 04:43 PM
Not entirely sure why this one is averaging out at a score below 4 on here (as I type this in '08). I guess it's impact isn't really evident to anyone who didn't pick it up at the time it was released.

It's not really a dancefloor record as such, but at the time this was released it was at the forefront of the new, more mature and sophisticated Jungle sound that would soon be referred to as 'intelligent' and as time passed, and the BPM increased, 'liquid'.

Both Fashion and Step up, whilst giving a firm nod to their 94 jungle roots, moved the sound and the scene far forwards, out of the realm of something to play to kids off their heads and into a sophisticated, more Jazz and Reggae influenced sound, rather than just a fat break and some flappy bass that happened to sample these genres.

Respect to Mr Size for the inspiration, and to Bryan G and JJ Frost for having the vision to push out music like this.

Omni Trio - The Haunted Science - 23-May-07 03:45 PM
A wonderful record. Running in at something over 20 minutes, it is a mix of the tracks on the album of the same name, along with original versions from the singles released in the same period. A fabulous sampler of some of Rob's best work, all mashed together. If you see it, grab it.
