Paradroid & Superlauncher - Please No Guitar Musician Requests - 08-Apr-09 04:24 PM
A great split release from 2 masters of the next level aesthetic. But while these guys definitely share an artistic philosophy, on this particular release their respective halves pursue individual objectives as opposed to any premeditated cohesion.
Paradroid's Glue Moon Embarge is a great intro. It sets the tone in short time with loose rhythmic assemblage dripping with deep psychedelic charisma. Magellenic Clouds takes it 1 step further in a pseudo utilitarian direction but still warms with deep & indulgently nonsensical bliss. Merely a hat tip to sanity. Then Encapsulated Teflon comes with the most dense & relentless barrage of Paradroidian logic. Hard wobbling beats splattered with cluttery stream-of-consciousness reinforcements. Over & out.
Superlauncher's Entire Poseidon takes a new path & starts with a sentimental & almost cinematic atmosphere before dropping in a hypnotic rhythmic arrangement that gently sways in & out of frame. Yet another insight to the far reaches of Superlauncher. Mobprobgateway probably takes the most straight forward approach of the whole release but interjects some seriously funky sci-fi electro magic with crisp digital finesse. Lastly, Bitter Terrain closes with a scattered arrangement of idiosyncratic beats over a slew of otherworldly field recordings into a completely mental trip.
Justice (3) - † (Cross) - 12-Sep-07 11:46 PM
Absolutely Redonkulous!! Halloween nite @ a women's roller derby on acid is the best way I can describe it. And as fuckoff & brilliant as it is in all of it's raw-epic-trans-decade-embracing-french glory, it still has 2 crossover singles that even MTV can't resist exploiting.
And while it definitely carries some stylistic characteristics reminiscent of former French icons like Mr. Oizo & Daft Punk, it still extrapolates enough to deliver a satisfying dose of both the familiar & the new. But don't let the superficial semantics distract you from the greater stylistic whole. † even ebs & flows through disco-infused sampledelica, post rock, & the cerebrally nostalgic bliss of Boards of Canada.
IMO, It's probably the most impressive artist album since Tipper's Tip Hop. A relentless selection of outstanding tracks that seemlessly meld together (not a live mix in this case) into an impressive & cohesive debut album.
STL - Homework LP - 03-Aug-07 03:33 PM
A great follow up to his outstanding EP on Perlon, Stephan Laubner continues to carve out a sincere & unique approach to minimal techno/etc. QRZ & High Again are the highlights for anyone looking for 4/4 material & warrant long-sided pressings IMO. Very moody & deep minimal techno tracks that mix well & already seem timeless.
Disappointingly, due to the LP pressing, it's frustratingly quiet. Particularly since the B-side is just loops & ambience. If only the A-side were split into 1 EP. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers...
Horror Inc. - Horrorama EP - 25-Sep-06 12:29 AM
An OUTSTANDING release from Akufen. It makes perfect sense that this is the first release from his Horror Inc. moniker because both of these tracks are quite haunting... Deep & Moody minimal techno w/ a bit of a Detroit-y vibe that's downright infectious. 5/5!
Horror Inc. - Horrorama EP : The Remixes - 25-Sep-06 12:29 AM
This is one of those records where you're initially quite skeptical because the original is so good that you can't imagine anyone improving on it... but then they actually DO!!
Both remixes are as good as the originals if not even better! They don't stray far but that's why they're so great. They just emphasize & embellish the basic melodies & run w/ it.
