Original Love - Eyes
Apr 24, 2010
Original Love has two distinct phases. Their releases on Eastworld tended to more collaborative efforts with a strong "blue-eyed soul" feel; lots of brass and soulful singing. Later releases on Pony Canyon increasingly became Takao Tajima's project alone, and had a more electronic feel.Eyes represents the peak of the band's more soulful side. In many ways, this album is the perfect summer soundtrack. The music is light, breezy and energetic, perfect for driving on a sunny day. The album starts off with "Let's Go!" that starts off with cowbells and slowly builds to a funky slow groove, complete with wah-wah guitars and vibes. The single off the album, "Sunshine Romance" is a horn driven piece all about heading to the beach for the summer, and musically and lyrically begs for a road trip. Slap bass drives "The Body For Sunshine", a funky number for when you finally get to the beach. "Deeper" is a ballad on the album, that just burns into a slow jam. Picking up the tempo, "Grow Up With Me" again starts off sparsely, with just drums, a piano riff and vocals, but gradually builds to a soulful number with real intensity in Tajima's voice. The samba tinged "Wallflower" is a nice change of pace; jazzy but not out of place in a bar on a summer night. "Judgement" took me a while to like, since Tajima's solo voice at the beginning is a little off putting. But once you get past that part, it becomes a funky barn-burner, building to a feverish pitch at the end. "Desert Rose" eases off a little the intensity, but winds up being a great mid-tempo pop song. "いつか見上げた空に" is an uptempo piano driven track, that winds up a being a fitting penultimate song, since it reflects the feeling of "Sunshine Romance"; a little slower, like at the end of the day, but still happy and relaxed. Finally, "I Wish" is another mid-tempo brass driven piece that Tajima makes soulful, but still driving. It's a fitting end to the album, like the coming back from an enjoyable day outside with friends. |
