Hashim - Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) - 17-Dec-04 07:45 AM
This is one of those records where you have to say: thank God (or indeed Allah) for the re-press! Without a doubt this song is timeless and maybe that is the reason why Rockstar Games used it in their game GTA: Vice City. Hashim's Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) was an instant breakers anthem responsible for much worn lino, bald patches and twisted ligaments! Fat beats, ruuude bass synth and mad vocoder, who could resist! Al-Naafiysh's place was instantly assured in the Hip-Hop hall of fame....How many times have you heard those immortal lines "It's Time" and "Just Feel It" cut to oblivion on two decks?
Xela - For Frosty Mornings And Summer Nights - 07-Feb-04 11:16 AM
You reallu gotta be into this stuff or you'll have to pass this release of as 'too intelligent'. But I myself have no problem with it what so ever! Great record. A sort of chill-out glicks 'n cuts, but not really ambient or IDM...very on its own. The record feels like the sound of the sea, when you close your eyes and lay back. Neo is also a great label, check 'em out!
Various - We Are Reasonable People - 21-Jan-04 05:34 AM
This is THE best Warp compilation so far! All the greats are featured on this massive record; Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, Mira Calix, Nightmares On Wax, Plone, Plaid, Autechre, Boards Of Canda, Broadcast. All of these artists turned Warp into the label that it is nowadays. If you want to introduce someone to electronic music [IDM] than this is one of the best records to show what is has to offer. Personally I believe that the Warp10's are a bit 'over-abstract' and that might scare off newbie's to the 'music of the future'. The Richard/Tom track is great: it combines the soft/weird/dark landscapes of AFX with the psychotic drum 'n' bass of Squarepusher. BoC's magic is still hearable in the simple but beautiful [MHTRTC-like] Orange Romeda.
Gotta love this record, peace !! Music is Math !!
