Various - Rough Trade Shops - Electronic 01 - 21-Nov-02 04:18 PM
Track 10 on CD1 is a wonderful cover version of The Smiths classic track "There is a light that never goes out". It is worth the price of this release on its own!
Joy Division - Closer - 21-Nov-02 03:31 PM
An excellent insight into the motives of Ian Curtis can be found in his wife's autobiography "Touching from a distance". Curtis and his wife married in their teens and had a baby together at a very young age. Curtis's suicide was not a grand artistic statement but seems to have been more like the actions of a man who had a mistress, was two timing his wife and couldn't deal with the guilt of this situation. Coupled with a history of depression and epilepsy, Currtis' suicide just reflected the culmination of some very human problems. For me, this makes the gripping beauty of Closer even more real and powerful. Don't mention Kurt Cobain in the same breath, it's a lazy comparison!
Fall, The - The Rough Trade Singles Box - 21-Nov-02 03:21 PM
I love The Fall but I have no idea why this counts as electronic music! That said, this box set is beautifully packaged but has one major drawback. The version of "Container Drivers" (truly a masterpiece) is not the John Peel session version that appeared on the original vinyl release of Kicker Conspiracy. Apparently, Castle Communications wouldn't pay the BBC to licence it to them. Instead, the version is the one from the Grotesque LP. Please stay awake if you have read this far ....
Various - No Rights Given Or Implied: The Original Samplers - 26-Sep-02 01:38 PM
"The Motorcade Sped On" is a fantastic track sampling radio footage of the JFK assasination. It was also released on a 7 inch single given away with the NME in the mid 1980s (which I also have!). "It's Up To You" is a superb sound collage of clips around the last Gulf War - ideal listening for polishing the bombs again ...
