Arctic Hospital - Citystream - 21-Aug-06 07:23 AM
Not many uptempo techno albums make me exclaim "Holy shit!" anymore, but this one certainly did after one listen. An absolutely stunning, refreshing album. It has my vote for techno album of the year thus far!
"Citystream" is crisp, clean, cool techno exemplar from start to finish. Every single track is incredible. Percussion programming is smart & intricate, synths are melodic & soaring, nothing is tired & repetitive... It's as if Arctic Hospital took the finest elements of the finest techno from the last 15 years and distilled it into a sublime masterpiece.
Whoever thinks techno is dead needs to listen to this diamond. Get this CD!!!
Andrés - Andrés - 03-Aug-06 06:08 AM
In this CD, Andres managed to release a CD as consummately soulful & enjoyable as any KDJ release, while maintaining a distinctive, non-copycat style. While each track on the CD is very, very good, one in particular really grabbed my attention. "Vibe Zone" has to have one of the grooviest basslines I've ever heard in any type of song, electronic or otherwise. If it doesn't get your ass shaking, or at least feet tapping, I'm afraid you have no pulse.
Richard Davis - Safety - 02-Aug-06 12:39 PM
Richard Davis delivers a true gem with "Safety". An album with one fantastic track after another is rare, but this is definitely one of those releases. I'd attribute its success to its focus on deep house with marked influences from a range of genres, from dub as on "Breathe", to garage on "Meaning", to washed out synthwork on "Colours", to more fully realized glitch on "Tell You Something", and finally to what I can only describe as Underworld-influenced (but laidback) "Fall".
The tracks work out on the dancefloor & in on the couch with headphones. The grooves are very deep, very smooth, and will definitely get your foot tappin' & head noddin'. Highly recommended!
Heavenly Music Corporation - Lunar Phase - 02-Aug-06 08:02 AM
Small wonder this is considered a classic - rightly so! I finally got my hands on a copy of it recently & it's mind-blowing. Acid lines, samples of naturescapes, dubby basslines, heavily processed & soaring synths; this CD has it all.
Every track on this album is fantastic, but the opener, "Energy Portal", is easily my favorite. It's a giant amongst giants, for sure. The track exudes a restrained, shimmering elegance like only the best ambient tracks can. Despite this restraint, and the incredibly intricate, subtle sample work, it manages to evoke a forceful presence that builds, layer upon layer, like a true work of art.
Kudos to Kim Cascone for this fantastic album!
Amalgamation Of Soundz, The - Fabric 12 - 02-Aug-06 07:56 AM
My favorite on the Fabric series thus far. The Amalgamation of Soundz really live up to their name on this one - I struggle to think of another mix CD where so many entirely divergent & seemingly incongruous styles have been so masterfully melded. The flow from start to finish is simply incredible. Following their own remix of "Meaning" with FSOL'S Papua New Guinea? Pure genius. A spectacular mix!
