The works of Joe Hisaishi when partnering with Hayao Miyazaki are usually memorable affairs, not so much with this score. Howl's Moving Castle, while a fine film, is far too whimsical and superficial to have any real lasting effect. Hisaishi seems to be channelling John Williams for large sections of this 68-minute album, to the point where I kept expecting the Home Alone theme to pop up. No such luck. There's little in the way of themes of melodies here. Hisaishi's old-fashioned approach to scoring this movie leaves it with no edge or appeal when separated from the images that inspired it. I can't recommend this album.
