Tomb of Dracula was a comic series released from 1972 to 1979 by Marvel in the US, which by all accounts was fairly popular and ran for 70 issues. The decision was made to use these comics as the basis for an animated film, released in 1980, titled Dracula, Sovereign of the Damned. By all accounts, the film was absolute shit, primarily due to the low quality animation and the fact that attempting to cram the plot of a full 70-volume comic series into a 90-minute film inevitably results in a butchered storyline.

The consequence was a very limited release for this soundtrack - the figure I've heard quoted was only 300 copies pressed - which is certainly a pity. On the one hand, a number of moody, atmospheric themes featuring a Baroque fugal leitmotiv on the harpsichord certainly set a theme and are more interesting to my ears than the average generic orchestral soundtrack. On the other hand we have 3 killer funky cuts equal to the best library coming out of that period - A3 with a psych flute solo, A4 with laid-back guitar fuzz and some mid-tempo work on toms putting us right in the zone and finally, to cap it all off, B5 featuring absolutely insane solo work on the marimba backed up by a tight brass section. Check it here. I love how many anime themes seem to feature "battle" themes that would be better suited to a sleazy joint than an actual fight, and this is no exception - up there with the best of them, and not to be missed!

I have no clue why Nippon Columbia didn't reissue this one a few years back when they did their "ANIMEX 1200" series of anime soundtrack reissues - certainly many soundtracks that are far more mediocre, and far easier to find than this one, got the remaster treatment. In any case, beware of the recent bootleg, which sounds decent for a boot but definitely has weaker bass than the original, especially in B5 which has some mad bass riffs not to be missed. If you get the chance to get your hands on a copy, or a rip, don't let it slip!

BOOTLEG RELEASE!!!! Removed codebar, no info from Columbia official site. They forgot to remove from the lower part of back cover the title "海のトリトン オリジナル・サウンドトラック" (Umi no Triton original soundtrack) which is the previous original release COJX-9295/6 from Columbia.
