I didn't know much about 18+'s debut, TRUST, when I first picked it up other than it appeared on Houndstooth, a label I trust implicitly. And as the mysteriously sexy hip-hop of "All the Time" came over the speakers, I was puzzled and beguiled. It has the vibe of trap, but without the unnecessary swagger and more concentration on mood and melody, as evidenced by "Midnight Lucy." "Club God" is more abstract, but it's not until "Crow" that I was behind them 100%; using a caw as a downbeat was a stroke of genius, and the back and forth of the vocalists adds a melancholy vibe. But the haze and glitchy electronics of "Jets" acts like a sonic psilocybin, while the familiar lyrical tropes of "Drawl" come up against the long, growling tones. "Forgiven" takes a more angelic approach to its background, and "Dry" offers up a mutant dancehall. The stripped-down nature of "Almost Leaving" almost sounds like a earnest folk song, though I have to admit that the later half of the album begins to lose focus somewhat, despite the clear-eyed "Cake." Still, it's definitely worth seeking out. Trust me.
