45 Dip might be hedging its bets when they name their debut album The Acid Lounge, but in this case, it’s appropriate. The spirit of acid jazz certainly thrives here, with a rejuvenating injection of funk. The first track is the standout: “Lizzie’s Balloon” floats and flits about, buoyed by vocal trills. But plenty of others are worthwhile too: “Bug Juice” clatters with elegant grace and “Searching for Marden Hill” swirls and bubbles. Sometimes the funk can be overwhelming, crushing the spirit of the song (like on “Auger in Orbit” or ), but for the most part, they’re deft and handy with their work. (Not so on “Underwater,” where the guitar solo hurts my ears.) Please do enter The Acid Lounge, but mind your step.
