“You sexy dancer you sexy sexy dancer..” Hard edged house music from Manchester's finest 808 State, with its catchy chorus and usual 808 State electronic madness, as if a washing machine were tumbling down your stairs. 808 State have a knack of sounding like they are punching their equipment to get the sounds into your ears. Hard key stabs, and groovy bassline from Massey et al, not as commercially successful as previous releases but a sure ‘State’ classic. The highlight of the Gorgeous release is easily the smooth dubby ‘Lemon’.

Gorgeous is the kind of album that would easily change your life for its advanced & sophisticated shape, though (I remember very well) the critics didn't receive it so unanimously at that time. 'Trance Europe Express 3' from early 1994 considered it the more accessible of all their albums until then, classy Breaks "Nimbus" and smooth-deep jazzistic "Black Morpheous" being the exceptions: a pretty unfair judgement it was at least, for 'Gorgeous' had so many moods an blended ingredients that the most appropriate analysis would give it the status of 'ground breaking' - even if the talented Martin Price had left the project before it was made.
The charm of it all also lied in the fact that Gorgeous had its secrets: on the aesthetic "Southern Cross", for example, 808 State sampled a compass from the ethereal synth lines of Tonto's Expanding Head Band's "Ferry Boat" classic; the simulated chorus on it seems very similar (and a bit accelerated) to "Uranium" by Kraftwerk - though it's very difficult to say in this case if the synth pattern was well known at that time (like a pre-set, then widely used) or if it was sampled & accelerated.
