This is the 1996 ReRelease of Black Secret Technology originally released in 1995...
Around the time of the ReRelease in German Music Magazine Spex A Guy Called Gerald was quoted saying that he believes that his original 1988 classic Voodoo Ray is cursed, it only has ever brought him bad luck... Back in 1988 the Major Label he was signed to was getting rich while he still had to work at McDonalds...
When he produced Black Secret Technology around 1994 he went back to original samples of Voodoo Ray and made "Voodoo Rage" out of these, claiming that the original vocal sample always said "voodoo rage" but his sampler in 1988 did not have enough memory space and therefore cut off the ending creating "voodoo ray" instead...
The disappointing commercial results of the 1995 album brought back Gerald s thoughts about the curse and that s the reason why this 1996 ReRelease does not contain the "Voodoo Rage" track...

How is the sound quality on this pressing - I seem to remember people saying it was poor / low volume ? Or maybe that was just the CD version at the time.

Track 4, "The Nile" was named after a nightclub in Manchester (On Princes Rd in Moss Side). The Nile was upstairs, and the club below was called "The Reno". Both clubs Gerald used to frequent, and he used both of their names for his tunes.

Finally bought myself a boom box to play my expanding collection of cassettes. This tape, found in my local charity shop recently, was first out of the bag and my oh my what an amazing piece of music it is. Lots of reviews in the main entry of this release - a work of total genius, sadly overlooked back in the day. We salute you Gerald for this fantastic effort.

Hand's down my favorite drum n bass full-length. Still in regular rotation all these years later. This captures something almost untangable and almost imperceptible - delicacy in drum in bass - and like drexcia said below - also keeps the rave ethos in mind. A Guy Called Gerald is probably best known for Voodoo Ray but it is this album where his creative juice (box) is really flowing...10 outta 10.

This was 'MY ' album of the month when it was released. As others have said, at the time other more obvious labels / outfits were releasing a lot of material and this was over looked by many. The metal headz , Good looking records, Lucky spin records, Moving Shadow labels among others were all churning them out by this stage. Strong album from Start to Finish.
Edit; Incidentally 'Finley Quaye' ( Finley's Rainbow singer) released an album in 2000 called 'Vanguard' and used the same lyrics again. (Can't remember the song )

Surprisingly good; I wonder why it didn't get greater notice at the time.
