Ah what could have been...

I was a regular on the Anjuna forums during this period and the buzz surrounding this album was palpable. Fans were hoping to see each year represented, a 2CD journey through Anjunabeats 10 years with unknown or glossed over gems finally seeing the limelight. Instead we got some insipid hit-after-hit short set that doesn't even fill the entire 80mins. Very disappointing. When the track list was released there as almost a mutiny, people felt terribly let down.

CD 1:

CD1 by itself is a nice set, although horrifyingly predictable. Still if you want an example of what the anjuna boys consider their most successful tracks then this disc does the job (as it was later mentioned was the intention). This details the commercial success of the label. These shoulders receives the usual love-hate flack. Personally I think One Last Look (one of the great forgotten Anjuna releases) would have been much more fit to reflect the Signalrunners talent but that didn't sell! Ends with banging trance but if you know anything about Anjuna you'll be slightly sick of these tracks as they were hammered home on almost every compilation and radio show.

CD 2:

Christ does this feel like a poor excuse for a remix disc. In retrospect we should have seen this as the herald of the label's demise from trance glory, but at the time it seemed just a slight uninspired misstep (Tiesto had just done the same thing with his greatest hits compilation with a disc of dull remixes too). The breakfast remix is nice, and the Nitrous Oxide remix holds up well (although the much grittier 'Nitrous Oxide Alternative Mix' released on a digital compilation blows it out the water). However the rest don't really add anything new, and some arguably don't add anything at all!

If you want an overview of the quality of Anjunabeats in the first decade of the millenium, Anjunabeats 100 is still the mix you should buy, and give this a miss.

Does anything stand out about this album? No, not really. It takes a couple of hits from years past, mixes them together, into an average set. It sounds pretty much like a typical episode of Trance Around the World. Except, a CD is supposed to have a higher standard of quality, both in terms of track selection as well as mixing quality.

CD2 is even worse because most of the remixes are uninspiring. 2/5
