Great Britain mainly played hip-hop-influenced in the past especially in male guitar straps. At the start of the new millennium the island is overrun by talented young women, both in the corner of soul (Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse) as singer/songwriters (Katie Melua, Kate Nash). The nineteen-year-old Adele Adkins really combines the best of both worlds. The instrumentation of her much-discussed debut album 19 is largely acoustic, in her animated nomination turns out she has listened well to jazz and soul. The resulting sound is a blueprint for everything for contemporary British pop goes through, and so it could happen that this ordinary girl from South London was the Centre of a huge hype. After the success of the first single Chasing Pavements now follows the debut, which shows that all the fuss is indeed justified. A penetrating voice, lyrics full of experienced teen suffering and catchy songs: Adele has all the makings of a star.
