It's no surprise that Agent Blue appeared on Matthew Herbert's short-lived Life label, since it shares his warped sense of techno and pop music. "Romance," for instance, has a banjo line pressed up against electronic doodlings, all accompanied by some coolly affectless vocals. "In Time Falls" sounds like sad electro-indie rock long before it had become its own cliche. "Opera" takes the angsty lyrics and riffs of a country song and transform them into something quite unique. The slow 4/4 throb of "3000" has hints of shoegazing beauty to it, while the Herbert-touched "If I'm a Gun..." has Herbert's scritchy rhythm and glitchy melodies applied to to Agent Blue's increasingly fascinating patterns. "A Gift" has a wobbly delicacy; "Tomorrow's Coast" is quietly haunting. The closer "Your World" goes back to shoegazing, with lovely results. A real hidden gem, this album.
