Well, after a 4-year absence, Akasha finally returned with _Love Philtre Magick_. It still follows the cinematic downtempo groove of their first album, but this time around, they don't seem as saddled with making the album "popular." So, no Neneh Cherry and no Maxi Jazz (a good thing in the latter case). Instead, they take a angular approach to melody and rhythm; the mix of breaks and ethnic-tinged jazz of "21st Century Boy" fade into an ambience borne aloft by a filered horn. "Ray's Song" and the title track both opt for a funky country-western dirge, while "Al Kamiri" slides from breaks into dub mode and back again, replete with strings throughout. "Mugwump Mongo" is probably the strangest trip to New Orleans you'll ever take. The dreamy and drifty "Wicca Woman" is mellowness personified. _Love Philtre Magick_ is a groovy journey that really shows Akasha coming into their own.
