This album is criminally underrated. Glad I found a copy and gave it a chance. Upbeat, positive and guaranteed to make you smile. This should be mentioned in the same breath as Let’s Stay Together and Call Me.

Shit, this is a huge and wildly positive review for the 5th best Al Green record. I'll have to give it another spin soon. Thanks!

The Soul Cellar by Memphis Vinyl Jim
Edition 1, Al Green's Full of Fire, Hi, 1976

Another excellent find from the good Reverand's catalogue, Full of Fire was released in 1976, the same year he took over spiritual reigns at Tabernacle. The Mrs and I have been fortunate enough to bring it into our growing Memphis vinyl collection directly after 1974's Explores Your Mind. Along with Explores Your Mind and 1975's Al Green Is Love, a significant story is told of passionate love for God and loved ones, a ribbon binding them with respective singles Soon As I Get Home (herein), The Love Sermon (1975), and Take Me to the River (1974). In fact, as The Mrs noted, the sequncing is so tight, so finely woven with soul and spirit, you feel the albums blending, as the Reverand takes you on a journey, masterfully telling uplifting stories of love and joy. That vision, along with the Memphis Sound, made sweeter with one of the best soul voices ever recorded, engineered by the great Willie Mitchell and backed by some of the best studio musicians of the time, including, notably The Memphis Horns, comes out thoroughly in this brilliant piece of simmering wax, truly full of fire.

And, no better a lead track has there been for a vision, this being the case of Glory, Glory, as Green begins the uplifting story of love and joy, which thanks God for the love he has found. Thats The Way It Is has a funky beat with interesting electric guitar and organ usage. In There's No Way, Al poignantly sings of an everlasting, true love, about which he would change nothing, wishing to never leave it behind.

Side 2 kicks off with Full of Fire, a brilliant disco-infused, soulful hit, known for the elusive 10" single that house DJs regularly seek. Together Again continues naturally with its sultry saxophone solo, as The Mrs said, "go on sexy sax" and with Al vocally dancing up and down Prince style, emphasizing the sensual feel. Further proving the tight integration of his matured style and overall continuity of the album, you can hear the gospel undertone similar to Explores Your Mind's God Blessed Our Love. Soon As I Get Home, featuring the Duncan Sisters on backing vocals, continues the passionate expression of joyous song, but for the thought of sitting down to talk with a passed friend, perhaps his cousin, Junior Parker, to whom he dedicated Explores Your Mind's Take Me to the River, or a deceased lover, as The Mrs would point out.

One for the ages, Full of Fire gets two thumbs up and will be happily accepted into both The Soul Cellar and our Memphis vinyl collection. Until next time, keep groovin.

Thanks for the recommendation about this being his best. Full of Fire is very disco-y, and excellent song. Most people would pick Let's Stay Together or I'm Still in Love With You when he was a chart hitting machine, as his prime, so this is a nice perspective.

I had been looking for the single full of fire and couldnt find it for a few years for a decent price. I went to recycled records in san francisco on a random day and they had the album for 15 bucks. After listening to the single 10 times i realized I would have paid 40 bucks for it. Simply put many will say that this might be al green at his finest. I would recommend this album for any al green aficionado.
