I hear a lot of Joanna Newsom here. 'Blend' gives me chills.

Not much of a fan, feels like she's still trying to find her voice. Each track sounds like a new voice which feels odd... sometimes it's Newsom like sometimes it's a deeper Circuit Des Yeux or Lana Del Rey voice. As for the music, it's some times Elliott Smith like, some times Son Lux or Sufjan Stevens like. But not for me. Curious how she develops over time though.

Both Godspeed and Slowdive had very solid entries for best album 2017, but if nothing else comes along, Aldous Harding: Party has to be it for me. Maybe it's that good ol John Parish is along for the ride. Maybe it's that it's from my homeland NZ. Maybe it's the title-track's perfectly haunting querulousness. Either way, this album is a striking confluence of what's good, true and beautiful in new folk music, whilst being pop-inflected in just the right, minimal way. Imagining My Man and Horizon are singles as perfect as could be hoped for in this field. And just what is she on about in that title-track? So very sweet and yet so very unsettling...

Highly recommended.
