THE IMPOSSIBLE THRILL is a disappointing follow-up to Alpha’s masterful first album, COME FROM HEAVEN. Though on “Still” and “Eon,” the first two tracks, nothing seems immediately wrong, except for a little fuzziness in focus. But subsequent tracks get increasingly unfocused, opting for a muddled wall of sound approach. That’s not to say that the tracks are necessarily bad -- but they certainly don’t seem as finely honed as they could have been. “Wise” begins with the usual melancholy flair, and “Especial” takes a break from the vocals, but both grow muddy less than halfway through. The beautiful duet on “Wishes” similarly gets overwhelmed by extraneous sound, a problem for “South” and “Almost There” as well. “Clear Sky” and “Al Sation” manage to stay pretty clean, but as the final track, “Fort” progresses, it’s clear that they had many ideas for the track and tried to cram them all in at the same time. Luckily, the Alpha boys redeem themselves with their next album, STARGAZING.
