The name "A Mackerel Is A Damn Wide Fish" was taken from a sketch by comedy duo Reeves & Mortimer. In exchange for the Phuture Assassins remix, Altern 8 remixed their release "Roots 'n' Future".

I like all 4 tunes of this EP. The DJ Nex's Mackerel Is A Damn Wide Fish Mix of Everybody is much better and better known than the original mix of the previous release. The other 3 tunes are pure quality as well. Far superior release than the original.

Some called it “The Closure”, as it was the last time that Mark Archer (also known as Mr Nex) and Chris Peat released together as Altern 8. Among all of the releases of this legendary rave-icon, this was the perfect single for the ‘eager to surprise’ DJs. At least three of the four tunes on it were full-quality, including the sophisticated Phuture Assasins version for “Everybody”, or even “Hole In The Speaker”, the perfect transition between Hardcore and Jungle which sampled the legendary Hip Hop vocals of , and another quote of the House tune ‘Carlton’s “Do You Dream”. My favorite version of the title’s tune was DJ Nex's Mackerel Is A Damn Wide Fish Mix, with the beautiful piano lines on the drop out and the bad-boy break beat structures that Mark Archer knew about so well.
