I was very excited when this compilation was announced, as I had previously enjoyed the fantastic ambient disc of Quietman's "Shhhh" album as well as the various ambient tracks on Platipus albums by Terra Ferma and Union Jack.

Unfortunately this compilation relies very heavily on what would be better described as Downtempo, which is fine if you don't mind a constant percussive rhythm but as I was expecting Platipus to release an album of ambient it came as quite a shock.

To me, this is music to use as backing for tourist guides. Pseudo-cool trip hop over 80's era Tangerine Dream synths. And that's putting it nicely.

As for the "mixing", well Altitude is a damn fine trance producer but his efforts at segueing the tracks here comes across as just plain lazy. Many tracks fade into each other in a fashion you would expect from your local radio DJ. After listening to the simply oustanding trio of ambient Euphoria albums (by Red Jerry and Solarstone) this was very apparent.

Maybe I'm just bitter, but when the first track on a chillout compilation is a bloated, sentimental, string laden mix of Charlotte Church's "The Opera Song" (NOT one of Darren Tate's finest moments) you know you're in for a nasty suprise...
