Oakeys Courtyard Mix - Oakenfold at his absolute best. What a remix...

For some baffling reason, the full original version of this track was largely overlooked, with Oakey's moronic bosh-happy Courtyard mixes dominating both the vinyls and the club play. Shame, because the original pisses all over it and is also (for me) a far better track than the much-hyped Piledriver. The original is a truly epic slab of progressive trance madness that has everything: atmospheric intro, wonderfully dramatic build-up, banging acid-laced main section and dreamy finale. For what is basically a peak-time dancefloor piece, it's brimming with unusual ideas - take the awesome half-time plodding intro, that distinctive metallic stab that hints at some unlikely dancehall influence, or the vocal stylings, which are a world away from the breathy faux-angelic nonsense trance was already becoming over-fond of by 1998.

The original made it out on some promos in '97 and you can hear it on a couple of Essential Mixes and so on from that year, but since then it's been mostly buried by the sands of time. It's well worth tracking down, a forgotten classic from that golden era of mid-90s progressive/trance where anything could go in a track. Some might say it's too long to play out, but there's even a handy stripped down bridge in the middle where you can mix in or out. Perfect-o.
