For INTO BASS AND TIME, the Ancient Astronaut's second album, they continue to delve into dub, hip-hop, funk and downtempo to come out with their own sound. "Still A Soldier," for instance, has a harpsichord melody laid over a fat bed of rhythm. The rap on "The Shining" is less compelling, however, but the slamming Thievery Corporation-like bass on "Impossible" or the beat-bopping fun of "Anti Pop Song" make up for it. At times, they seem content to settle for more simple hip-hop, as on the party dub of "Don't Stop" or "Eternal Searching," but they can also craft more cunning beats, as on "Worldwide," or flavor it with some Indian/Middle East spice on "Peace In The East" or the reggae dub on "Calvert Street Rock" and "Give It To You." "Rocket Science" is a lovely subliminal deep track with some transcendence, while "Last Night" has a seductive edge. The vocals on "Bitter Hypnotic" from the Phat Old Mamas add a touching feel before "Nocturne" closes out the album in a smoky Chinese jazz club. The astronauts deliver another rocket!
