Although a lot of people tend to list this early pioneering work as Electronic / Musique Concrète / Experimental - L'Envol / Ambitus is actually not electronic at all. The vast majority of the sounds featured are percussion: gongs, cymbals and a variety of mallet instruments. André Almuro's forté was to turn such instruments around and make them unreal. Are they horns or guitars I hear? - for instance. Steeped in reverb, and with minimal use of reverse sounds, strong use of filters, it's both spacious and powerful, L'Envol the more open one, Ambitus the more dense one. Timeless stuff that is still fresh after 50 years.
