Lollipop by Aqua is a pivotal single the A side ofcourse is famous debut Aquarium
. For me this was one of the first bands I ever discovered, and really got into and listened most frequently to between 4th to 6th grade. However during 5th and 6th grade we had to learn about music history in class 50'a and 60's rock n roll for the biggest part, Mr Tambourine Man by the Byrds and Ain't She Sweet, and I spearheaded a rock n roll only approach there for a while which dragged Aqua a bit in the dirt, premature right? I Guy who worked as my assistant in school made a compelation tape Radiohead, Oasis - Things started to change.
regardless of the fact as I was making a set of compilation discs for my niece which I gathered from all artist I am interested im, no matter the genre. I started looking for Didn't I and Lollipop.
Anyway I especially remember this Maxi single Lollipop (Candy Man); release. I will not have a hard time admiting that the album it is taken from is rather lightweight but my may interest with Aqua that has resurfaced is about the maxi single releases I had lost since moving away from home. The mixes are genrous in lenght and have an intricate aura surronding the production that well conpliments the pop core of these songs and make the end result so much mor reward. If you like, Fat Boy Slim or Air's seminal Moon safari or Come with us by the chemical brothers. Try this release. Thanks to discogs I have had the opportunity to find Aquas mid 90's singles and they are on the way I started with Didn't, which is probably rarest one, and then I made it a priority to get Lollipop because I remember it like it was yesterday how my big brother had seen it as import in a big record store and had made up his mind that he could by it if I handed over the requisite money,
Lollipop is driven by a quite brisk 4/4 beat which is definately a bridge between house and disco, the rado cut of courses is fairly straight forward but has some small tasty intricate detail,´; while at the same time being a quite refined song. The mixes that clock around generous lenght are supringly worthwhile so long after Aquas popularity has come and gone, this EP and the mixes of Lollipop and Dr. Jones show there was more to this group than Barbie, and while I set the aim to hear most of their releases If it doesn't break my budget I have decided Barbie Girl on hold for a while - it may have been a big hit and we sang it in music class but the House/Pop nugget Didn't I that came with aqua diary called Didn't I is more worthwhile and the same goes for Lollipop, I Like the Extended version of Lollipop how it builds up more and from the modest beginnings. Listening also to the Dr Jones mixes I was reminded of Antiloop who where very famous in Sweden at time, not just for these club mixes but for the classical inspired sort of acid house track "In My Mind". Now in the internet age most isssues can be found if one takes enough time to browse for these recordings. For me the years 1997 to 1999 will always be the best years in music. When I discovered Will Smith Aqua and my all time favourite act Supergrass. they were very instrumental in show the way how to listen to music.
Highly recommended
