Wonderfully off-kilter, Ark's album ARKPOCALYPSE NOW avoids easy comparisons or a single descriptor. "House of the Dead," for instance, sounds like twitchy voodoo, with vocals samples, seemingly random, floating in and out of the mix, while "Obamark" takes Barack Obama's famous campaign speech and sets it in Chicago deep house ("Rising" also approaches more traditional house). "Puince" goes slower, almost reminiscent of Herbert's later work with Dani Siciliano, while "Old Chariot" goes for more gospel house and "Biscouit" for crazed funk. And what can you do with the oddly poppy and harmonic "Sugar Of Brain" but just enjoy it? The longest track, "Deep At All," is a minimal, deep journey. There's a bit of downtempo folk on "Mini Puince," showing off Ark's versatility. Oh, if only every apocalypse could be an arkpocalypse...
