Some trivia: Armin once told in an interview that " X Marks The Spot" is his kind of tribute to Speedy J - Symmetry, one of his personal favorite tracks. If you listen you know why... ;-)

An absolute classic. Tight, hypnotic trance, with a slightly cheesy melody that floats way above the groove.

Awesome EP. the three songs are amazing, the three tunes have powerfull sounds, cool bases, that means that has a amazing production made by Armin,
like the majority of the people my favorite tune is Blue Fear, first because was one of my first trance tunes that I heard,in the early days, also has a beautifull and hypnotic melody with a lot of new sounds for that time.

Armin van Buuren mentioned in an interview that "X Marks The Spot" was the actual A-Side for this EP but that Johan Cyber saw more potential in "Blue Fear" decided to put that on the A-Side. All the tracks have a quite simplistic production style and there wasn't much effects or extravagance, just basic driving tracks that were good tools in a trance jocks arsenal.

"Blue Fear" is the epic track of the bunch with it's distinctive high pitched lead, "X Marks the Spot" is a much clever production melodically and uses the sounds better and with it's driving rhythm, it's is use as a mid set builder. "Archae From Space" is the one trace of van Buuren's earlier House productions and it's basicly a "Greece 2000"-influenced remix of "X Marks The Spot". Most of the melodics are dropped and it keeps a couple and focuses on the rhythm and the bassline.

Blue Fear is generally considered to be the song that started it all for one of the world's top DJs and producers, Armin van Buuren. Initially going by his first name only, Armin gets his name out to the trance community, and his future as a trance icon is evident in the music. While track 2 and 3 are decent, Blue Fear is an amazing trance journey that is even remade in 2003 for his album, and is still played today in clubs and on the radio.

Armin Van Buuren has gone onto achieve world wide fame, but this is one of his earliest tracks and is surely a 'must' for of his fans.

In terms of style it's similar to BT & Paul Van Dyk's 'Flaming June', i.e. lush piano twirls and shiny production values, and indeed the two mix brilliantly together.

With it's rich melodies and urgent pumping production, this is one of those sort of tracks that stands out head and shoulders above it's peers.

Not so much a remake as a slight upgrade of the ground-breaking original, the 2004 version features a fx-ladded introduction & outro, beefier percussion & a new, eerie 3-note piano roll. Armin must've taken heart to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" adage & left his '97 mostly alone, applying mostly cosmetic changes. The Solid Globe remix is a rougher sounding affair, with a strong, pseudo-moogish baseline overpowering the chords. Go for the A side, but make sure you pitch it down a bit.

Both tracks amount to well-crafted exercises in Euro-style trance, featuring strong percussion, bouncey baselines & unfiltered synth sweeps. The Agnelli & Nelson mix is a throw-back to pre-2000 trance, with a fierce drum build-up @ around the seven minute mark. Scott Mac takes Armin's trademark sweeping chords & staggers them on the flip side to great effect, creating an almost ideal peak track for a trance set. Play the original early in on your set, drop either of these remixes @ peak-time & see the crowd go nuts.
