This is quite possibly one of my favorite recordings of percussive music, Ghanaian drumming aside. The music itself is an ever changing intricate tapestry of unfolding rhythms, sometimes with no real beginning or end. This album has continued to stay with me over the years, and each listen just gets better and better. Don't expect a smooth studio mix. These really are outdoor field recordings (other than a couple tracks) however they are still very well recorded, and in my opinion this only adds to the delight of the album, as you can hear the environments and the people interacting with the music. It's a musical photograph of an amazingly rich musical heritage that we have borrowed so much from, but sadly know so little about.
