Oh man what a pressing. Yea the sound is purposely bad but the mastering on this first press is amazing. Every version I've heard of this classic sounds like muddy crap with bad instrument separation, this pressing is totally clear, punchy and in your face with perfect dynamic range. Very alive and present sounding.

Damn, this pressing sounds great. One of the best classic death metal albums treated with respect in this 180g repress.

Gatefold sleeve is fine, it's nice that it's not glossy. It doesn't feel particularly durable though which sucks quite a bit. The record itself sounds fantastic, not like the music is particularly amazing sounding (it's a fairly poor recording, that's how most early death metal sounds though) nice and thick. I notice that if I hold it up to the light it looks like there's some kind of cloudiness, does anyone else have this?

They repressed the record. The 2000 copies pressing was gone by 2011. I bought one of the last ones directly from Peaceville.

This record is pure beauty.

The production is absolutely visionary, equalled perhaps only by Darkthrone's Under a Funeral Moon. Such bravery to choose the "bad sound" from "good sound" has seldom been shown, and it's this decision which lays as the base of Mental Funeral's greatness. The drums sound as coffins hammered with bloody bones, the guitars are muddy yet strong, vocals totally beyond. Of course, this is bad only by silly gleaming studio values, and great by any proper understanding of essential things in music.

The lyrics. Well, the lyrics are as they should: grim, bloodthirsty and downright wicked. They fit the picture like a rusty screwdriver through a politicians eye.

The music is good too.

Seriously, the underlaying influences of Black Sabbath filtered trough death and doom metal, create such songs that seem like they been around for ever. It's pure stick-in-your head melody, but melody that's been filtered through foggy meadows filled ten feet deep with dead things. Dead, butchered things.

Bone grinding groove is there as well, as a kind of final pick axe through your nostril before you're tossed into the hole.

It's all good.
