One of many great, lost albums from the mid-90s that I seem to keep discovering, or I already picked up back then and hope someone else will remember or appreciate... Baby Fox's 'A Normal Family' is anything but normal. It's a spooky, nightmare-ish trip-hop experiment, with the weird and wonderful sonic mesh of dub, reggae and downtempo electronics. There's much to enjoy and investigate here, including the terrifying single 'Jonny Lipshake' and mutant disco thumper 'Za Za (Get Ready)'. It's all interwoven with snatches of film dialogue, interludes and ambient sounds, but if it gets a bit too dark and disturbing in places, make sure you stick it out for the sugar pill at the end; The sweet, hypnotic and almost spiritual 'Rain (In Memory Of Rain)'. You'll find this album cheap and if it pleases, you may want to investigate the accompanying CD singles which boast interpretations by the likes of Ashley Beedle, The Aloof and DJ Krust, plus there's a few live tracks also. 7.5/10. Trivia! Baby Fox's female vocalist, Christine Leach has a writing credit on Madonna's 'Ray Of Light' track.
