Barbelo and Jorge Reyes (featuring Susan Lincoln) "Ethnoaural" CD

Appearance of famous Jorge Reyes made me very curious about this debut release of Monterrey based Barbelo (Daniel Trevino and Rodolfo Garza). Now I can say this collaboration was very fruitful, it brings colorful and fresh mixture of electronics and acoustics, where various styles and moods are melted together. Modern technology with prehispanic instruments are joined on some pieces by beautiful chants by American singer Susan Lincoln and also by rare location recordings by Peter Avar. Most of the tracks feature other guest musicians on drums, guitar, bass, cello, sax, flute, chants and prayers. Strong influences of jazz or progressive rock can be heard on tracks like "Amazonia", "Climbing to Epsylon", "Smart dreams from the Azteca bar", "Mahamantara" or "Echoes from a distant land". Among the highlights are for sure also "Earth" with vocal masteries of both Susan and Jorge, evocative "Pralaya Zero" with beautiful piano and cello parts as well as exotic "Hyperethnic" and "Gaia's dream", both bridging modern and traditional cultures. "Ethnoaural" is definitely an exciting walk across the borders of time and space. Unfortunately, this was one of the last acoustic magics by Jorge in studio before his unexpected death at February 7th, 2009. "Ethnoaural" is highly recommended debut of Barbelo and I will make sure to keep an eye on these two talented Mexican guys. With deep respect to Jorge.
