Apparently this might actually be a very early version of the Soft Machine's "Feelin' Reelin' Screelin". One theory i've heard is that Fowley secretly made copies of an impromptu
recording session that he was present for in London before the Soft Machine had actually
secured any kind of deal with a record label, then sent the tapes to his home in Los Angeles.
And when he returned to Hollywood, he then proceeded to remix the takes for a tiny
independent label release. Whatever the facts may be regarding this sole release by
"The Beautiful", there is no question in anyones mind that has heard "Shadows In The Sun"
that it is truly one of the top tier holy grails in the 60's psych freak out genre. Both sides have
appeared on numerous psych comps. over the past few decades but the original 45 is hideously rare and some speculate that less than forty copies of the single still exist.
If you appreciate really good pop psych that is super wigged out and you haven't yet heard
this then the very next thing you should do when you are done reading this review is check out
the video and hear it for yourself. Then you will understand what it means to be "Beautiful" in
a very special way!
