I think this demo album is really bad. Only for hardcore fans. Schmoozer is the only track I like on this. I do like A Western Harvest Field by Moonlight, Stereopathetic Soulmanure and Mellow Gold if we are talking about the weird stuff he did back in the early 90s.

Many a time in your life will you come across an album that's like this. Definitely not in sound or feeling, or the way it was produced, but the fact that it is just shot down after one (sometimes not even a full) listen, and then has bad things said about it. As I've said for a lot of Beck's earlier works in my reviews for One Foot in the Grave, Stereopathetic Soulmanure and A Western Harvest Field by Moonlight, no actual critics give albums like this a chance. But, always it's the reasons that it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the music that's good. But, this is good in its own way. This album is done in a lo-fi, experimental anti-folk style. At the time of this album's release, nothing like this really existed before. There was an anti-folk scene in New York (which is where Beck moved at the time to get in on the action), but still this album was different. With its blend of Beck's odd style of old folk playing and wacky lyrics combined with low quality recordings and samples, it truly wasn't the norm even for a strange genre like anti-folk. And for that, this album gets no chance. Or, one at the very least. And I'm not going to lie, there are some bad songs on here. "Feelings" and "Special People" are borderline utterly terrible. But in contrast of the good songs in here like the nonchalant acoustic piece "Totally Confused", the crazy band performance with adlib'd lyrics "Schmoozer", and the dark, insane sounding "Mutherfukka" which would see it's day again on Beck's hit album "Mellow Gold" alongside popular songs like "Loser". What's good about these songs is that the titles can grab your attention, and then after listening to it, you're not going to have an easy time forgetting them. Who could forget "Special People", even if it's an awful song? I had an ex-girlfriend whom I showed this album to who I haven't spoken to in months. Most likely, the very annoying, terrible, yet somehow still catchy tune is still burned into her mind. This album can reveal depth in repeated listens. At first listen, "The Fucked Up Blues" is just Beck spouting bullcrap. But listen after listen, you can feel the sadness conveyed by the song, and it can give depth in that manner. People should give these albums a shot more, I definitely didn't enjoy almost ANY of his albums after the first time listening, maybe besides Mellow Gold. After you listen so many times, music like this can really speak to you. What's not at first pleasing to the ears can definitely be pleasing to the soul. And that's what this album is.
