Big Daddy Kane ‎– Prince Of Darkness

This may not be Kane's top album, but it certainly has some great tracks. People often talk poorly about this album because of the R&B/Swing tracks, as if that's what the whole thing sounds like. That sound doesn't even make up half of the album.

There are plenty of purely Hip-Hop tracks sound-wise, they're just mostly in the second half. A stand-out from the first half is the fast-paced "Ooh, Aah, Nah-Nah-Nah". Furthermore, there are some memorable moments for Hip-Hop fans throughout the album. The guest verses from Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes are enjoyable. The ending consists of an updated version of Kane's classic "Raw" with new samples followed by an entertaining "diss track" towards Kane from his DJ Mister Cee. I personally got a kick out of that.

It may be fair to say this album isn't perfect, but to say it's outright terrible is to ignore its best tracks entirely. It's a worthwhile listen for any Kane fan, even if the R&B/Swing parts aren't your cup of tea. Listen for yourself.

forget the other review this is about as far from classic Kane as you can get. No one wanted to hear a BDK swing album (and i am a big fan of swing) we wanted that raw, hardcore we all knew and loved. If you can find it for cheap enough it is worth getting for Come On Down And obviously Raw 91.
It's no wonder he did a complete turnaround back to the gritty stuff (for the most part) for the Looks Like A Job For...in '93 as this one was shitted on by pretty much everyone.

This is classic Kane but with a smoother, R&B groove. The singles "Groove With It" and "The Lover In You" were both monster hits at U.S. R&B radio. The latter even crossed over to the American Top 40, thanks largely to the fact that the rap was laid over some highly recognisable loops from Prince and the Revolution's "Pop Life." The fact that Kane managed to get the Purple One's blessings to use the samples --- well before Prince's infamous battle with Warner Bros. over royalties, etc. --- speaks largely to Kane's rapidly growing influence not only in the rap arena of the day but mainstream American radio as well...
