Pro tip: This mid-80s reissue was pressed with the same stampers that made the pricey and lauded late 70s PVC issue. Pick it up if you see it for a reasonable price.

Might I ask why this is considered a “dark and depressing” album, I could never understand it. Or maybe I just listen to a lot of dark music that I can’t even tell?

I love Big Star, fan since the early 90's.
Oddly, 3rd has grown on me during these past decades. #1 Record is just that when it comes to Big Star. That being said, 3rd is the most interesting and enjoyable to listen to. Sad songs, experimental sounds, stripped down rock and roll, session men, a VU cover, and that Jody Stephens tune!!! Their best?

Just noticed it says "Teenage Fun Club" on the OBI. Mine costed rather cheap so I've always been suspicious about its authenticity, considering the fact that the track listing on the back is incorrect, as the other comment said. Anyway, at least looks cool.

I own several different pressings of this and after doing several comparisons this pressing beats out all others! This also includes most of the recorded output at the time it was released. The top 3 with the word top used very loosely.
#1 this pressing (dojo porky press)
#2 1st pvc press a distant 2nd
#3 2nd pvc sterling hub press sister lovers 1985. This one sounds very dull and flat. No life at all.

Reclaimed a copy after selling it a few years back. What a mistake that was, but fortunately these are floating around for reasonable prices nowadays. If 4 Men With Beards have any diamonds in their largely offensive catalog, this is that diamond. It sounds great. Why they can't do this with all of their releases is beyond my comprehension. My copy is fairly quiet and the disc itself is flat. The mastering sounds superb. Save your money on those expensive box sets and pick this one up.

It is a strange album, at once beautiful and tender and devastating and hollow, both conservative and experimental, desiring to attract and confound listeners. I feel like I'm in the middle of this music when listening, a three dimensional space. It's on my emotional wavelenght like no other music. I resonate in time with the music and all barriers collapse. At times I can feel almost too raw to keep listening to but there are also moments of extreme tenderness and beauty.
