On the liner notes of this album George Russell describes the music as "a view of the entire musical scene of today, synthesizing elements of pop, rock, avant-garde jazz and neo-classic 'new music'".

"Event II" appears close to the "Bitches Brew" sound (the 1970 album that is usually placed in the foundations of the jazz fusion style), with a preeminent and repetitive bass line.

During side B the Fusion-like (or Jazz-Rock) feeling is present throughout, but the Avant-garde Jazz style seems also present here and there along the work: mostly on the outer tracks ("Event I" and "Event VIII"), but also on "Event III" (to me, a Fusion/Avant-garde mixture), and on the piano intro of "Event V", a movement that grows fusion-like, then switching to a brief jazz-rhythm-oriented segment for Bill Evans’ acoustic solo.

Considering Russell’s statement quoted above, the release year of this album (1972), the overall permeating electric sound (due to the use of electric keyboards and bass) and the rhythms adopted, besides the Big Band style (adequate for the number of musicians used), the Fusion and Avant-garde Jazz styles seem adequate for this enjoyable and unexpected record.
