Happy Cycling is an amazing track and was huge back when this came out.

XYZ is a massive track, but it was likely left off this release because of licensing issues indeed.

What you're left with is the pretty underwhelming Happy Cycling, which functions well enough as a bonus to MHtRtC, but hasn't the pull of a lead track, an Aquarius near-identical to the album version, and an interesting but somewhat inferior take on Olson without its signature analogue fuzz. Pretty boring release then.

Also, beware of the obfuscating cover, which is easy to confuse with Autechre's own, much more interesting, Peel Session (a mi/tDR™ blunder? in my Warp Records?).

XYZ from the sessions most likely left off the release because of the big fat Edgar Froese sample.

XYZ is one of my favorite BoC songs of all time. Are there other versions?

Well, after MUSIC HAS A RIGHT TO CHILDREN, the Boards of Canada PEEL SESSION feels almost superfluous. The alternate versions of "Aquarius" and "Olson," while nice, don't add much, while "Happy Cycling," with its peppy seagull rhythms, shows their perkier side. This short EP only whets the appetite for more Boards of Canada, rather than fulfilling it.

I think Music70 releases single-digit copies of BoC stuff just to toy with all of us.

The version of "Aquarius" here has a slightly different intro, a different sequence of numbers, and an added synth line (or perhaps vocal sample) in the middle, and is also slightly longer. It's also noticeably different from the single version of "Aquarius", which seems to be in a different key. "Happy Cycling" is identical to the version on Music Has The Right To Children. "Olson" is radically different from the album version: the synthesizer sounds are completely different, the airplane noise is replaced by a scratchy, almost insect-like sample, a melody is added in the middle, and the track is almost twice as long.

I don't suppose it would be any less disappointing if this "Peel Session" had been billed as a "Peel Session Excerpt," but at least there would be truth in advertising; only two of the four tracks from the session are actually included. The broadcast version of "Happy Cycling" is replaced by an already-released version, and the track "XYZ" is omitted. The two tracks from the session that are included ("Aquarius" and "Olson") are probably worth the price of admission for fans since they are uniquely tweaked and classic tangents of the better-known versions. It's hard to not feel cheated, however, when you discover that the disc only delivers half of the broadcast session.
