Bought it because of overwhelming critics. I can't understand . IMO it's interesting like watching paint dry.

January 5, 2010

This has to be the best album I listened to in 2009 (besides the fact it was released in 2008, I only last year began listening to full albums on Spotify. I actually don't recall at all how I came across this album, but bloody hell it is good. After my first listen to this album I thought, you know this is a real gem. After my second listen, I decided that I was going to have to download it and give it a more close listen on my iPod. By the fifth time of listening to it, in a row!, (This is the one of the only albums I've listened more than 3 times in a row, with the other being The xx - xx) I decided I was going to buy this album.

Now more on the actual content, Bon Iver is not a current household name... only one of my friends knows who he is, but he is much better than anything else that has been in the charts for the past 2 years. His music has such a strange sound to it, its dreamy, soft, obscure, emotional, sad, happy, and just plain awesome. Bon Iver's vocals are some of the weirdest i heard, and in a good way...his voice can go from a very mellow tone, to quite a high tone for when he is try to put out some emphasis. The music is very folk like, and similar in that way to more known artists like Ray LaMontagne and Damien Rice - but has some electronic tones, similar to those of The xx. The music writing skills here are just compelling, almost every line has a meaning and is a metaphor. I just cannot express how much I love this album, and it would have to be one of the best ever albums I've listened to - and I cannot understand how this man is still unrecognised with hardly any radio play...but then again looking at the state of the charts while speaking, I don't want his talent to be tainted by talentless generic RnB/Dance sounds filled with Autotone from start to finish.

If you want something relaxing, beautiful, sweet, sensitive, obscure, un-heard of to listen to then listen to this album. If you want something different to listen to, listen to this album. This album is a prime example of an impeccable debut, from someone so small-time and unheard of.

For those unsure where to start with this album, go to his official site, and download/listen to the free mp3 Skinny favourite song and one the most played songs i have on my iPod (up in the top 10). After that, well i think the album is just jaw-droppingly good so this won't be easy, i say listen to The Wolves (Act I & II), the longest track on the album, and Creature Fear.

Ill finish with my favourite verse from Skinny Love.
"And now all your love is wasted, And who the hell was I?
I'm breaking at the bridges, And at the end of all your lines"
