Booka Shade burst onto the scene with MEMENTO, a sharp slice of melodic dance music. From the first twinkles of the modal dub tech intro on "Vertigo," they show off their chops at blending various genres, as the track quickly incorporates some funky electro bass. "Double Identity" starts Drexciya-deep, while the spare title track benefits from some more tribal percussive elements. The vocoder adds a strange melancholy to "On & On," though "Friend For A Night" starts bringing up the mood. Their electro gets all wobbly on "Mr. Torrance," but the momentum really starts to build with "Something Physical." Things peak with the Spanish-flavor of "Cha!" "Moonstruck" takes the album out with a near country-western feel, with drawling guitar fuzz and all. The album serves as a harbinger of great things to come.
