Odd dub-pop-electronic creations from Burnt Friedman -- as if you'd expect anything else from him. FIRST NIGHT FOREVER sees him working with vocalists throughout, from the neo-soul of Steve Spacek on "Where Should I Go" to the child-like vocals of Barbara Panther on "Machine in the Ghost" that has some Afro-pop trappings. Spacek returns for the mournful jazz of "Walk With Me," which is like a break-up in slow motion. It's the dub that takes the center stage on "Need Is All You Love," the reverberations coming from all directions, backed by Theo Altenberg's bluesy vocals (which take on a preacher's tone on "Healer.") Enik turns chanting into a cry from the soul on "Western Smoke" and gives the twitchy "Thumb Second" and even twitchier feel. The two "Chaos Breeds" are both sparser -- though both also chocked with jazz instrumentation and guided by an all-encompassing sonic aesthetic. Hey, if it works...
