of the 3 remixes of the "Hurdy Gurdy Man", 1 is the Jim Melly mix, also found on the U.S. CD; one is the Paul Leary mix, also found on the import CD editions; the 3rd and final remix is a Jim Melly remix that is unavailable elsewhere.

PIOUHGD marks the beginning of the Butthole’s slicker production era that also produced Paul Leary’s underrated solo masterpiece The History of Dogs. The album opens up with Revolution 1, a ripping discombobulated guitar instrumental- Paul is absolutely in charge all over this album with his fuzzed out tones and screaming vocals. Revolution 2 is a minor classic with its beautiful melodies and upliftingly surreal lyrics. Lonesome Bulldog follows- a fairly straight ahead country number that sounds completely weird in this context. Three more reprises of the song emerge at different times throughout the album, each with a different instrument taking the lead. Hurdy Gurdy Man was the single from the record; the 12” has the sound collage piece Barking Dogs- also available on the CD version of this LP. Golden Showers is a weird little tune with synth horns, foreshadowing the sound of their work in the coming decade. Next up is their heavy duty tribute to Sabbath and classic show opener Blindman. The song disintegrates into No I’m Iron Man, another wild guitar workout with Gibby talking to himself in different effected voices. This gets close to capturing some of the on-stage chaos from those years. Next is a completely odd reworking of the classic anti wife-beating anthem Something from the first release. PSY is the epic “psychedelic jam,” a staple of their live shows throughout the 80’s. It’s always been one of their finest moments and the studio version here does not disappoint. Gibby adds lyrics and turns it into a 10 min epic- just amazing stuff that still sounds fresh 20 years on. Though they made a few more nice tracks in the following decade, PIOUHGD is the last great album by one of the wildest and most original psychedelic bands to ever create music.
