It is impressive how the material made in the electronic hip-hop phase, in the mid-1980s, is imaginative. Resources were limited at the time, everything was practically new to the hip-hop universe, but imagination and creativity were at a stage up in this period. This Byron Davis record symbolizes this moment well.

I love the melodies created by synthesizers and the kind of metrics used in rap. Electro Rap made between 1984/1985 has a special flavor for me. And those California records are unique and special.Listen to Dark Star, JSA, among other obscure records made in this same region at the same time. It is a way of complementing this type of sensation, with this aesthetic and this musical language.

Cheers,
Rodrigo.

Players only records was founded by byron davis and darrell carbullido in 1984, pioneering the musician and dj team that would be followed by numerous hip hop groups in the years to follow. the first release "i´m just a player", an up-tempo song with a hard bassline. in 1985 byron davis and the fresh crew published the song "wanna be´s" followed by the electro west coast classic "my hands are quicker than the eye". after "the drunk", the last production on players only records in 1986, byron davis and his fresh crew moved to miami and continued their success on the four sight label. darrell carbullido went on to co-found z'Looke, an r&b group with orpheus/capitol records in 1985.
